The Journey of a Thousand Miles Begins with a Single Step

This quote, attributed to the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, is one of my all-time favourites. It really captures the essence of life, of strategy and of accomplishment.

Sometimes our goals can always seem so far away. That goal could be to achieve a doctorate, to get your dream job, to sculpt your perfect body, to start your own business or any other number of amazing things. The goal seems so big that it’s daunting, it’s unachievable. It’s for this reason that people give up, after all, it’s easier to not try than to risk public failure.

There’s a great interview with Will Smith, though, where he tells a story about his childhood. He explains how his dad knocked down a wall of their house and told him and his brother to rebuild it. At first they said it was impossible. But brick by brick, day by day, week by week they rebuilt that wall. He says that he never planned to build a wall, he just planned to lay the most perfect brick he could every day.

And that’s exactly what you need to do; you need to lay that perfect brick. So you need to go for that run, you need to lift that weight, you need to read that book and you need to set up the first part of that website. Don’t think of running a marathon, don’t think of entering the Olympics, don’t think of becoming the next Stephen fry and don’t think of creating the next Facebook. Instead focus on going for the best run you can, focus on lifting the most you can today, focus on enjoying that chapter and focus on making that webpage look beautiful.

You need to take that first step. It doesn’t matter how small that step is, so long as it gets you closer to your dreams.
